4 1/2 StarsI am a major bibliophile and absolutely love to read. I get excited when I first start a new book because I never know what kind of world I'm about to enter! As I looked through the titles for this month's First Reads books, this one was the one that stuck out to me the most. I'm a sucker for most kinds of fiction and this one seemed the most interesting to me.When Never Comes by Barbara Davis is a story of learning to deal with your past and trusting again. Christine Ludlow is married to bestselling author Stephen Ludlow and she has almost everything she never had as a child. Very early one morning, she is woken up by her phone ringing to hear that Stephen's car crashed off a bridge into a bay. Stephen didn't survive and shockingly, he wasn't the only one in the car that night. The incidents from that early morning send Christine on a search for answers to her many questions. Who was she married to? Who was the woman in the car? Christine will discover the answers to not only these questions but many others she has kept buried for painful reasons. When I started this novel, I was hooked from the beginning. The storyline is intriguing, even though it's also sad and shocking at times, and it made me want to keep reading. There are some slow parts but I felt the story flowed nicely. There are many flashback scenes that help us gain a better understanding of why Christine is the way she is and I think she is a well-developed character. Even though I sometimes wanted to jump into the story and tell her to stop doing what she was doing, it all ended up being part of her healing and learning process. Some readers are cautious as to what kinds of books they are reading. When Never Comes contains an affair and a few sexual scenes.Overall, I enjoyed this novel and am happy I chose to read it this month. It's a story of being confronted with your past and learning to deal with it so you can move on. It was slow-moving at times but mostly enjoyable so I recommend reading it! This was my pick of the Kindle’s April’s First Reads for this month. I usually wait a week or two after the First Reads comes out before choosing a book. I like to wait until there are reviews of the books before making my choice. I read the description of all the books and the comments from customers about each book, but no matter which book I was reading about, I kept being pulled back to “When Never Comes.” There was no toss up for me even though some of the others sounded good; I just knew this one was the one I had to get. I am so glad that I picked this book! I was hooked right away as I started reading this story. Even when I was not reading it I was thinking about it. This story is about so many things—betrayal, pain, love, distrust, anger, and forgiveness. Christy-Lynn is the name of the main character and who the story is mostly about. Christy-Lynn does not hold herself in high regards and thinks she is not a worthy person—even though she shows compassion, kindness and generosity throughout the story. Christy-Lynn’s world comes crashing down one day when she gets the news that her husband had died in a car accident by running into a lake. This was bad enough but they also found a half naked woman in the car with him, who also drowned. Because her husband was a famous author, the reporters drove her crazy—she became a prisoner in her own house. So she decided to go on the run—not the first time she has run away from her problems. Until she went on the run and ended up in the small town of Sweetwater she never had any real friends. In Sweetwater she not only finally let her hair down to her new friends, she found them not at all judgmental of her and was for her all the way—they had her back no matter what. But the friend that she most trusted was a man in this small town, but yet again she was afraid of him. Or should I say she was afraid of herself!Christy-Lynn has to open a lot of doors and let a lot of old painful memories out before she can even begin to live—and of course there was a lot of pain involved but it because of these memories they made her what she became. I felt such compassion for Christy-Lynn that at times I felt my eyes becoming leaky—especially when she met Iris and realized what this child was going to have to live through now that her parents were dead and that her great-grandmother was not long for this world. I kept hoping that Christy-Lynn would do what was best for the child and not what was best for Christy-Lynn. You will just have to read the story to find out how it all ended. There was no profanity in this story and it did have one rape scene, and one romantic sex scene but the romantic sex scene was not too descriptive. I will look for other books by this author.
